Description

Inspiring, true-life stories of the Underground Railroad come alive for our times in "Tubman Travels: 32 Underground Railroad Journeys on Delmarva." Join award-winning writer Jim Duffy as he wanders the backroads and small towns of Maryland's Eastern Shore and Delaware to visit the sites and scenes that put modern-day travelers in touch with the moving stories of brave men and women who set out against all odds in search of freedom from slavery.

This second edition has been updated to add newly developed sites and attractions that have sprung up since the book was first published in 2017. The latest archeological findings and historical research have been incorporated as well.

The most famous 19th-century heroes of these stories--Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass are featured prominently here. But so, too, is an array of lesser-known figures whose journeys out of bondage speak volumes about timeless themes of courage, love, family, and faith.

Each chapter in the book is a self-contained tale tied to a modern-day destination. The journeys begin on the wide Choptank River in Cambridge, Maryland and then wander along scenic backroads leading through history-laden towns such as Easton, St. Michaels, Denton, Chestertown, Centreville, Bucktown, Madison, Galena, and Chesapeake City. Crossing into Delaware, the journeys continue through Dover, Middletown, Seaford, New Castle, and Wilmington.

Duffy is the author of four books dedicated to travel, culture, and history topics on the Delmarva Peninsula. His two collections of "Eastern Shore Road Trips" mix modern-day itineraries with stories from days gone by. "You Wouldn't Believe " is a collection of essays recounting "44 Strange and Wondrous Delmarva Tales." Duffy is the founder of the Secrets of the Eastern Shore website and Facebook page, which are the go-to sources for travel tips and unforgettable stories about life on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and in Delaware.
